Elche (Elx) lies inland in the Baix Vinalopo and is famous for the Palmeral, the largest palm grove in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town holds two further UNESCO honours, for the Misteri d’Elx mystery play and the palm-weaving tradition, and gave its name to the ancient Iberian bust known as the Lady of Elche. It remains a major centre of Spain’s footwear industry.
