El Campello

El Campello is a relaxed coastal town just north of Alicante, easy to reach on the coastal tram. It keeps the feel of a working Spanish seaside town rather than a big resort.

The long sandy beach and promenade are the heart of it. There is a fishing port where an evening fish auction still takes place, with seafood restaurants along the front. The town's landmark is the Torre de la Illeta, a sixteenth-century watchtower beside the Illeta dels Banyets, an archaeological site with Iberian and Roman remains and rock-cut fish-breeding pools by the sea.

It makes an easy day out from Alicante. Bring sensible shoes for the rocky headland by the tower, and come late in the afternoon for the light on the water and the fish auction.
