Santa Pola is a fishing town in the Baix Vinalopo, built around one of the Costa Blanca’s busiest fishing ports on the site of the Roman Portus Illicitanus. Beside it lie the salt pans of a natural park, home to flamingos and other waterbirds, while a 16th-century fortress-church guards the centre. Boats leave the harbour for the island of Tabarca.
