Sierra de Bernia

The Sierra de Bernia is a long, craggy limestone ridge rising between Altea, Calp and the Jalón valley, and one of the best-loved walking areas on the Costa Blanca. From the trailhead at Les Cases de Bèrnia, paths fan out across the mountain to suit different levels of walker.

The classic route is the circular hike around the ridge, taking roughly five to six hours, whose highlight is the Forat de Bèrnia — a natural tunnel that runs clean through the mountain, emerging on the far side to sweeping views. There are also gentler options, including a shorter there-and-back walk with fine views that families can manage.

The reward everywhere is the panorama: on a clear day you can see the sea on one side and inland mountains on the other, with the ruined 16th-century Fort de Bèrnia on the southern slopes. Proper footwear, water and an early start are essential, as much of the route is exposed.
