The Torre de la Illeta stands on the seafront at El Campello, north of Alicante, a tall stone watchtower built in the sixteenth century to guard the coast against pirate raids. It is one of the most prominent landmarks along this stretch of shore, rising beside the town's marina and promenade.
Right next to the tower lies the Illeta dels Banyets, a fascinating archaeological site on a low rocky headland where Iberian, Roman and earlier remains have been uncovered, including rock-cut fish-breeding pools by the sea. Together they make for an easy and rewarding stroll, with clear views along the coast.
The tower itself opens only for occasional guided visits, but the setting, the seafront walk and the nearby beaches are reason enough to come. El Campello is easily reached from Alicante, including by the coastal tram.
