Vejer de la Frontera
TownVejer sits on a ridge about 190 metres up and eight kilometres back from the Atlantic. The distance is the point: built inland and uphill to be invisible from raiding ships.
What it actually is
A working town in La Janda, not a preserved showpiece. Medieval walls and gates ring the old quarter; the castle and El Divino Salvador crown it. Listed in 1976; national beautification prize in 1978.
The cobijado, and the narrow lanes
Vejer’s women once wore the cobijado, a black cloak leaving one eye visible; gone from daily use, it reappears at the fiestas. The shaded, confusing street tangle is the other survival: cool in August, hopeless for satnav.
