San Andrés de Teixido (Santo André de Teixido in Galician) is a tiny hamlet and pilgrimage sanctuary on the cliffs of the Serra da Capelada, in the municipality of Cedeira on the north coast of A Coruña province. You reach it on the mountain road from Cedeira, park above the village and walk down a steep lane of souvenir stalls to the 18th-century church. Local tradition says that whoever does not visit the saint in life will come after death. It suits anyone curious about Galician folk religion and coastal scenery; skip it if you cannot manage a steep walk, or expect crowds on the main pilgrimage days.

Access and parking

By car: Turismo de Galicia’s Cedeira to Cabo Ortegal route leaves Cedeira through the valley of the river Condomiñas and climbs into the Serra da Capelada. At the Chao do Monte lookout you get your first view of Teixido. The road junctions on the way in are marked with crosses and stone cairns left by pilgrims. From Teixido the road continues up to the Garita de Herbeira, 3.5 km north-east in a straight line.

Parking: OpenStreetMap shows two surface car parks on the road above the village, about 125 m and 250 m east of the church. From there you walk down to the sanctuary.

On foot, as a pilgrim: the traditional road to Teixido is marked with a fish symbol, for the sardine the saint ate on his journey. Turismo de Galicia says pilgrims walk almost 50 km to the sanctuary; one branch starts at the monastery of San Martiño de Xubia, in Narón. Turismo de Galicia also suggests the path from the stone cross of Cristo dos Carrís as the best way into the village.

What to expect

The lane of stalls. Walking down the steep slope to the church you pass stalls selling roscas (ring-shaped biscuits), images and medals. Two souvenirs stand out. The sanandreses are small figures of baked bread dough, painted in bright colours, showing the saint’s boat, his sardine and other motifs; sellers say they protect the house where they are kept. Herba de namorar (“love grass”, sea thrift) is said to help in matters of love.

The sanctuary. The whitewashed church with its slate roof and bell tower holds a Baroque altarpiece and images of the saint, surrounded by flowers and model boats left to protect their crews. Candles burn in front of wax votive offerings shaped like parts of the body, left in thanks for favours received. Legend says the apostle’s boat capsized here and turned to stone, and you can see the “petrified boat” on the nearby cliffs.

The rituals. Turismo de Galicia describes several. On the way in, carry a stone and add it to one of the milladoiros (small cairns), so that God knows you came. At the Fonte do Santo, also called the Fonte dos Tres Canos (fountain of the three spouts), make a wish and drop a crumb of bread into the basin: if it floats, the wish will come true and you will return next year. Animals on the paths should be treated with care, since tradition holds that they may be the souls of those who never came in life.

Practical details

OpenStreetMap shows free public toilets and a restaurant in the village, and a viewpoint just above the church. Turismo de Galicia’s Cedeira page adds that pilgrims on the way to Santiago believed the Milky Way ended here. We could not find official opening times for the church or a mass schedule; check locally or with Cedeira town hall.

Accessibility and safety

The lane from the car parks down to the church is steep, and you have to climb back up. We could not confirm step-free access to the sanctuary. On the mountain road, Turismo de Galicia warns of livestock and cattle grids: drive slowly. The village sits on high sea cliffs; keep to the paths.

Best time to visit

For atmosphere, the pilgrimage days: 8 September, Pentecost weekend and 24 June. For a quieter visit, go outside those dates. Pick a clear day if you plan to continue to the Garita de Herbeira, as fronts often cover the range.
