Basílica de Santa María (Elche)
Historic siteThe Basílica de Santa María is Elche’s great baroque church — built for one purpose above all: to stage the Misteri d’Elx, the UNESCO-listed medieval mystery play performed inside it every August.
Why visit the Basílica de Santa María
Rising over Elche’s old town on the site of a former mosque, the basilica is a monumental baroque church with a blue-tiled dome you can climb for views across the palm groves. But its real significance is intangible: it was built to house the Misteri d’Elx, a sacred musical drama of the death and assumption of the Virgin that has been performed here since the Middle Ages. UNESCO recognised it as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, and machinery in the dome still lowers singers from the heavens as it did centuries ago.
Misteri d’Elx
A medieval sacred music-drama staged inside the basilica every August — UNESCO Intangible Heritage, and unique in Europe.
Climb for views
The blue-tiled dome can be climbed for a rooftop panorama over Elche’s old town and its surrounding palm groves.
Baroque on a mosque
The 17th–18th-century church was raised on the site of the town’s former main mosque, in monumental baroque style.
Aerial staging
Centuries-old stage machinery in the dome lowers singers representing the heavens during the Misteri — still in use.
Old-town heart
The basilica anchors Elche’s historic centre, a short walk from the Huerto del Cura and the palm groves.
August performances
The full Misteri is performed on 14–15 August, with rehearsals earlier in the month drawing big crowds.
Practical information
- Getting there: central Elche, about 20 min from Alicante airport; easy on foot once in the old town
