Basílica de Santa María (Elche)

The Basílica de Santa María is Elche’s main church, on Plaza Santa María in the old town, about 600 m from Elx Parc train station. Entry to the church is free (Visit Elche). Its bell tower is a separate paid visit: 170 steps to a terrace 37 m up, with views over the Palmeral. Every August the basilica is the stage of the Misteri d’Elx, a sung medieval play on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list. Skip the tower if stairs are a problem.

Access and parking

By train: Elx Parc is an underground commuter station on Cercanías line C-1 (Murcia/Alicante) and serves the city centre. It is at Avenida del Ferrocarril 10, the station Visit Elche lists for the city (Visit Elche, train). From there the basilica is about 600 m away in a straight line, in the old quarter of la Vila.

The entrances: the church faces Plaza Santa María. The bell tower has its own small door on the same square, and Visit Elche gives the tower’s address as Plaza del Congreso Eucarístico (Visit Elche, bell tower).

Parking: neither the parish nor Visit Elche’s basilica page gives parking information. If you drive, plan to use a public car park in the centre and walk; the train avoids the question.

What to expect

A working parish church, not a museum. The present building is the third church on the site. The one before it collapsed after very heavy rain in 1672, and the new church was built from that year until 1784 (Visit Elche). The plan is a Latin cross, with a large central nave and four chapels on each side. Over the crossing sits the large dome, tiled blue on the outside, which is part of the stage for the Misteri d’Elx.

The doorways: the Assumption façade and the main door of San Agatángelo are by the Strasbourg sculptor Nicolás de Bussi (1680–1682). Visit Elche calls the Assumption doorway one of the finest examples of Valencian Baroque.

The bell tower: a spiral staircase leads up to the bells, then a short wooden stair to the top terrace, 170 steps in all (the parish). On the way up you pass the rooms where the bell ringer lived until the 1930s, with panels on the basilica and the Misteri. At the top are four bells, the oldest cast in 1654, and a terrace 37 m high with two telescopes. The view takes in the city, the palm groves around it and as far as the Mediterranean.

The Misteri d’Elx: a sacred musical drama of the death, Assumption and crowning of the Virgin Mary, performed in the basilica since the mid-15th century. It is entirely sung, mostly in Valencian with some Latin, in two acts on 14 and 15 August. Ancient aerial machinery is used for the special effects, and more than 300 volunteers take part each year (UNESCO). It was declared a National Monument in 1931, and survived the Council of Trent’s ban on plays inside churches thanks to a papal bull of Urban VIII in 1632 (Visit Elche).

Practical details

• Church: free entry. It opens in the morning and again in the evening, but Visit Elche and the parish give different evening times, so check the parish page before you go.
• Bell tower, 2026: the tower operator lists visits every day from 10:30 to 14:30, and from 10:30 to 19:00 between 6 July and 31 October. Last entry is about 30 minutes before closing; bank holidays vary. Adults €2, children up to 10 €1, under 5 free (campanariomiradorelche.com, checked Sept 2026). The parish and Visit Elche print other hours, so check before you go.
• Mass: said daily. Times are on the parish worship page; during Mass, visit quietly or come back later.
• Misteri tickets: entry to the basilica on 14 and 15 August is free. The full dress rehearsals on 11, 12 and 13 August need a paid ticket, sold at the Casa de la Festa and El Corte Inglés (Visit Elche, Misteri). The Misteri d’Elx board announces each year’s sale.

Best time to visit

For the Misteri, come in August: the rehearsals on 11–13 August show the whole play in a single day, with a ticket, and the two acts follow on 14 and 15 August. At midnight on 13 August the “Virgin’s palm” firework is launched from the tower terrace to close the Nit de l’Albà (parish). Outside August the church is quieter; pair it with the Palmeral, 0.3 km away in a straight line.
