Salinas de Santa Pola

Natural park

The Salinas de Santa Pola are working salt pans turned nature reserve — a chessboard of bright, shallow ponds beside the sea where flamingos feed and salt is still harvested.

Region: Baix Vinalopó Province: Alicante Type: Salt pans / reserve Best for: Flamingos Status: Natural park

Why visit the Salinas de Santa Pola

Just behind Santa Pola’s beaches, the Parque Natural de las Salinas is a patchwork of shallow, brightly coloured evaporation ponds where sea water is still turned into salt. The same conditions make it a magnet for birds: flamingos are the star, feeding in the pink-tinged shallows, alongside avocets, stilts and terns, with big numbers on passage and in winter. Paths and hides around the pans let you watch the birds against the salt mountains and the sea, and a visitor centre explains both the salt-making and the wildlife. It pairs naturally with the boats to Tabarca island from Santa Pola’s port.

Birds

Flamingos in the pans

Flamingos feed in the shallow, salt-rich ponds — the reserve’s signature sight — with avocets, stilts and terns alongside.

Salt

A working saltworks

Sea water is still evaporated to harvest salt here, leaving white salt mountains beside the ponds.

Watch

Paths & hides

Trails and bird hides ring the pans, with the birds framed against the salt heaps and the sea.

Colour

Bright shallow ponds

The ponds shift through greens, pinks and whites depending on salinity, algae and the light.
