BeachPlaya del Silencio (El Silencio, also called Gavieiro) is a 500 m pebble cove below cliffs and islets near the hamlet of Castañeras, in the municipality of Cudillero on the western coast of Asturias. What to expect
Asturias tourism calls the cove a shell protected by cliffs and islets of various sizes that calm the force of the sea, and probably one of the most beautiful beaches in Asturias. It is a beach of clear pebbles, almost untouched but very popular. OpenStreetMap maps several rocky islets just offshore, and a viewpoint, the Mirador del Silencio, on the cliff path about 400 m south-west of the beach, which gives the classic view down onto the cove.
The lighthouse route of Asturias tourism runs from Cabo Busto east past the beaches of Cadavéu and El Silencio to Cabo Vidío, which it calls one of the most beautiful clifftops of Asturias; on a clear day you see as far as Cabo Peñas. It also describes this coast between Valdés and Cudillero as the Protected Landscape of the Western Coast.
- Swimming: the islets take some of the force out of the sea, but there are no lifeguards. On pebbles, water shoes help.
- No services: bring water, food and shade, and take your rubbish back up.
Practical details
Cost: the beach is free. Parking in the free car park is free; the fields further back charge, and we could not confirm their prices.
Dogs: not allowed on the beach from 1 June to 30 September. Outside the beach, they must be on a lead of no more than 1 m (Asturias tourism).
Food and drink: there is nothing at the cove. Cudillero, about 12 km east, has restaurants round its harbour.
Nearby with services: the Concha de Artedo, about 8 km east, is 760 m long, has a Blue Flag, showers, a car park and lifeguards from 26 June to 8 September (Asturias tourism, checked November 2026).
Accessibility and safety
Playa del Silencio is not accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs: the only way down is the path with numerous stairs, and OpenStreetMap tags the beach as not wheelchair accessible. The steps and stones are slippery when wet. There are no lifeguards and no first-aid post, so swim only in calm conditions and never alone.
Best time to visit
July and August bring the warmest water and, as Asturias tourism notes the cove is very popular, the most visitors. Late spring and September are quieter and good for walking. Dogs are banned from June to September. On a grey day, the clifftop viewpoint is still worth the stop.
