Luanco (Gozón, Asturias)

Village

See it on the map ↓Costa Verde guide

Luanco (Lluanco in Asturian) is a fishing village and the capital of Gozón, on the central coast of Asturias between Gijón and Avilés, and the closest village to Cabo de Peñas, the most northerly point of the region. You get there by road on the AS-238 or by bus to the small bus station on the edge of the old town; the village has a sheltered harbour, a town beach, an 18th-century clock tower and the Asturias Maritime Museum, founded in 1948. It suits a half-day stop on a coast drive, families who want a town beach with lifeguards and anyone interested in the fishing history of the Bay of Biscay. Skip it if you want a long wild beach: for that, drive on to Xagó or Verdicio.

What to see

Harbour and old quarter. Luanco’s port sheltered a large fleet that first hunted whales and later fished for tuna, sardines, mackerel, monkfish, spider crabs and goose barnacles; there was also a busy canning industry (Turismo Asturias). The old quarter has terraces, cider bars and restaurants, and spain.info notes palace buildings, mostly from the 18th century, and some Modernist houses.

Clock Tower (Torre del Reloj). One of the few examples of 18th-century public architecture in the region, used over time as a watchtower, a prison and a warehouse. It stands in the centre, about 200 m from the beach.

Church of Santa María. At the end of the promenade, almost in the sea. Inside is the Cristo del Socorro, which, according to tradition, saved Luanco sailors from a storm in the 17th century.

Asturias Maritime Museum (Museo Marítimo de Asturias). Turismo Asturias calls it the oldest museum in the Principality, founded in 1948. It shows boat models, fishing tackle and gear, the history of navigation, nautical charts and the flora and fauna of the Bay of Biscay. It belongs to the Asturias network of ethnographic museums. We could not confirm current opening hours or prices; ask at the tourist office.

La Isla and the Ermita del Carmen are listed by Turismo Asturias among Gozón’s characteristic sights, with the lighthouse and port.

Beaches

Playa de Luanco (Santa Marina) is the town beach. It was rebuilt in 1995, because before that the whole sand was washed away at high tide; since then it has become a busy cove with good facilities, framed by the church of Santa María. Luanco also has La Ribera beach, which is rarely used for swimming.

Bañugues, a short drive north, is a calm beach with very little swell, natural pools at low tide and Palaeolithic archaeological sites; Turismo Asturias calls it very family-friendly. Further towards Cabo de Peñas are Verdicio, with strong waves breaking on the shore and dunes, and Xagó, about two kilometres of sand and dunes popular with surfers. All three are in the Cabo Peñas Protected Landscape and have lifeguards from 13 June to 8 September.

Food

Luanco shares with Candás a tradition of sweets, including marañuelas, and of seafood (Turismo Asturias). spain.info says gastronomic events about tuna have been held in Luanco since 1984. OpenStreetMap shows a municipal food market, the Plaza Municipal de Abastos, near the Casa de Cultura.

Accessibility and safety

Playa de Luanco has accessible showers and toilets and an amphibious chair, which you book in advance on 605 823 456, plus marked buoys (Turismo Asturias, checked November 2026). In an emergency call 112.

Dogs: from 1 May to 30 September, animals are not allowed on Gozón’s beaches, waters and bathing areas, except on La Ribera beach in Luanco (the section left of the central ramp) and Llumeres beach, between 07:00 and 10:00 and between 20:00 and midnight.
