Playa de Gulpiyuri
BeachGulpiyuri is a beach with no sea in sight: a collapsed limestone sinkhole 100 metres inland, filled by the Cantabrian through underground galleries.
What it actually is
The Llanes coast is intensely karstic, hollowed into caves, blowholes and dolinas. At Gulpiyuri, near the hamlet of Naves, a sea cave roof collapsed, leaving a 40-metre basin open to the sky but joined to the sea underground.
How to visit it properly
Two rules. Go at or near low tide: at high water it is a deep saltwater pool with little sand. And go early. There is no road; you park in the marked area and walk in across fields. No facilities, no lifeguard, no shade.
Frequently asked questions
Can you swim at Gulpiyuri?
You can paddle, and swim at higher water, but it is small and unsupervised. A curiosity, not a swimming beach.
How do you get there?
On foot only, from the designated parking near Naves.
When is the best time to go?
Low tide, early morning, outside August. The tide decides whether it works.
