Getaria

Juan Sebastián Elcano, the first man to complete a circumnavigation, was baptised in a church with a street running underneath it.

What it actually is

Getaria is a working port squeezed onto a neck of land beneath Mount San Antón, a headland known as the mouse of Getaria and an island until the sixteenth century. The old quarter runs downhill from the fifteenth-century church of San Salvador, under which the Katrapona passage leads to the port. Balenciaga was born here in 1895.

Txakoli and the grill

The village perfected two things. Txakoli is the sharp, faintly sparkling white poured from a height, a denomination of origin since 1989. The other is whole fish cooked in a wire cage over charcoal, on grills set out in the street.
