Playa de Bolonia
BeachAt the western end of Bolonia’s bay a live dune more than 30 metres high climbs into the pines and keeps moving. It has been a protected Monumento Natural since October 2001, which is why this bay has no apartment blocks.
What it actually is
A broad white-sand bay in Tarifa municipality, in the Parque Natural del Estrecho, down one road off the N-340. No promenade, no resort: low houses at El Lentiscal, a few chiringuitos, then dune and pine.
The dune, and the ruins at the other end
The Duna de Bolonia covers 13.17 hectares on the isthmus of Punta Camarinal and is genuinely mobile — the dead trunks in the sand prove it. The Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia stand at the north end of the same beach.

Can you climb the dune?
Yes, on foot. Steep, loose and hot underfoot in summer.

Behind the beach; it fills early in July and August.
