The Salines de Santa Pola is a natural park of working salt pans and shallow lagoons just inland from the town of Santa Pola, on the southern Costa Blanca. The salt-rich water turns soft shades of pink, and the whole wetland is one of the best places in the region for birdwatching.
Flamingos are the star attraction, often seen wading in the lagoons alongside avocets, herons and many other species. Well-marked, level trails make for easy walking and watching, suitable even for children, though some paths close from spring to late summer to protect nesting birds.
It is an easy and rewarding outing from Santa Pola or Alicante, best in the gentle light of late afternoon. Bring water, sun protection and, if you have them, binoculars to make the most of the birdlife.
