MuseumThe original Altamira cave has been closed to general public access since 2002; what visitors tour is the Neocueva, a full-scale replica inside the museum nearby.
What it actually is
A state museum outside Santillana del Mar, built round a reconstruction of Europe’s most famous painted ceiling. The art was recognised in 1879 by Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola, whose young daughter María spotted the bison overhead.
Why a replica
Visiting damaged the cave. It closed in 1977, reopened restricted in 1982, and shut again in 2002 when green mould appeared. Since 2014 five randomly drawn visitors a week get a short supervised visit: 252 people in all of 2025.

Realistically no; a standard ticket covers the museum and Neocueva.

Yes — for almost everyone it is the only way to see the ceiling.
