Why visit Atalaya Castle
Villena sits on the historic border between the crowns of Castile and Aragon, and its castle shows it. Of Almohad (Islamic) origin and later expanded under Christian rule, the Castillo de la Atalaya has a rare double ring of walls and a tall keep with vaulted chambers you can visit on a guided climb. From the battlements the view runs over the town’s rooftops and the wide vineyards of the interior. Down in Villena, the town museum holds the celebrated Treasure of Villena, one of the most important hoards of Bronze Age gold in Europe — the two make a natural pairing.
Double-walled tower
A rare double curtain of walls and a tall keep with vaulted rooms make this one of the region’s best-preserved castles.
Frontier fortress
Almohad in origin and expanded under Christian rule, it guarded the old Castile–Aragon border.
