Why visit Font Roja
Officially the Parc Natural del Carrascar de la Font Roja, this sierra south-west of Alcoy protects one of the last dense holm-oak (carrasca) forests on the Valencian mountains. Because it sits high and north-facing, it stays noticeably cooler and greener than the coast, and the woodland shelters deer, wild boar, squirrels and a rich birdlife. Colour-coded trails climb past an old snow-well, charcoal hearths and lime kilns to viewpoints that reach, on clear days, all the way to the sea. It is an easy, family-friendly slice of nature half an hour from the beaches.
