How we assess: this guide draws on published tourism sources and regional knowledge rather than a recent on-site visit. We flag anything seasonal and never quote fixed prices.

The salt flats and flamingos

The Salinas de Santa Pola natural park is a working salt operation and a protected wetland at the same time. Its shallow lagoons turn pink and host flamingos for much of the year, with marked paths and hides for birdwatching right beside the town.

Beaches and the castle

Santa Pola’s beaches are mostly shallow and calm — the Gran Platja is a long, family-friendly stretch of sand. In the centre, a 16th-century seafront fortress (Castell-Fortalesa) houses small museums and anchors the old town.

The ferry to Tabarca

From the port, ferries cross to Tabarca, a small car-free island and Spain’s first Mediterranean marine reserve. Clear water and protected seagrass make it a favourite for snorkelling and an easy, memorable day trip.

Our verdict

Santa Pola is the easiest place on the coast to mix wildlife, calm beaches and an island day trip. Bring binoculars for the flamingos and book the Tabarca ferry early in summer.
