Altea is a Marina Baixa town known for its whitewashed old quarter climbing to a church with a distinctive blue-and-white tiled dome. Below it a promenade runs along pebble beaches, while the Serra de Bernia and mountain viewpoints rise inland behind the town. Quieter and more artistic than neighbouring Benidorm, it has long drawn painters and craftspeople.
